Today is Juneteenth, which commemorates the ending of slavery in Texas on June 19, 1865. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, it was not enforced in the state of Texas due to a lack of Union troop presence and enforcement in the confederate state.
However on June 19, 1865, Union soldiers led by Major General Gordon Granger and his regiment entered Galveston, Texas to override the resistance to the law and to enforce the Executive Orders. Union Major-General Gordon Granger read General Orders, No.3 to the people of Galveston. It stated:
“The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.”
Since 1865 black Americans have regarded June 19th as the official emancipation day, and on January 1, 1980, the state of Texas proclaimed June 19 an official state holiday thanks to the African American state legislator Al Edwards.

Protests in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian cities, set off by a 10-cent hike in public transport fares, have clearly moved beyond that issue to tap into widespread frustration in Brazil about a heavy tax burden, politicians widely viewed as corrupt and woeful public education, health and transport systems and come as the nation hosts the Confederations Cup soccer tournament and prepares for next month’s papal visit. Soooo, I just found the coolest thing ever.
If you’ve ever wanted to be able to play with a cat without ever owning a cat or even being anywhere near a cat… Now is your chance! The Oregon Humane Society has a little room with kittens and a bunch of toys. Toys that you control. There are three little remote control toys that you can use from the comfort of your own home to play with these adorable little kittens. You can rotate the camera and zoom in to keep tract of the kittens and their antics, even if you don’t want to play with the toys. All you have to do is go to their website, which you can find by clicking here, and then install Microsoft Silverlight which will take a total of like 5 seconds. You then get in a queue and wait for your turn to play with these fuzzy cats for 2 minutes before your turn is up.

this obviously isn’t exhaustive - these aren’t all the reasons why these women are feminists, and it’s certainly not all the feminists in pop culture at the moment
if i forgot anyone please put them in the reblogs
This is great but one of the quotes is misattributed. Ke$ha didn’t say that about rape culture, Jessica Valenti did in her piece for the Nation
